Emergency Services in France

Whatever your reasons are for visiting France, if you have the EHIC card you could be entitled to reduced or even free medical care.

EHIC is normally valid for three to five years, covering any necessary medical treatment during your trip to France. EHIC will give you access to medical care provided by France on the basis of you being an ‘insured’ person living in the country.

Most people in the UK are entitled to EHIC, however there are some restrictions depending on your nationality. EHIC is not relevant if you are going to live in France.

Possessing EHIC might not cover everything you would normally get free that the NHS in the UK provides.

Seeing a Doctor In France

The EHIC card will cover pre-existing illness and any constant disease. Advanced arrangements will need to be made before arriving in France for kidney dialysis and oxygen therapy. EHIC will also cover routine maternity care while in France.

You may possibly be entitled to reimbursement if you have encountered extra costs on healthcare. Reimbursement will depend on the difference between the amount it would have cost the NHS and the actual cost of medical treatment you received in France.

Always take out comprehensive private travel insurance regardless of whether you have EHIC. Private insurance will cover any extra costs that are not reimbursable.

Remember EHIC will not be suitable cover if going to France for medical care is the main purpose of the trip.
