UK Television in France
added by Madeline Horth
The majority of people, who have recently moved to France or are enjoying a break in their holiday home, find themselves missing English language television and radio.
Just like the UK, France have also gone digital. Allowing more channels to be broadcast from a television mast (some in high definition). Check if you have an old or new television with a scart socket to see if your set is suitable.
There is no need to buy a new television, if it worked in the UK it should also work in France.
Satellite is the only option available to pick up English television in France. A satellite dish will need to be pointed in the correct direction, cabling to a television and satellite receiver, also known as a ‘digibox’. Do not confuse this with a ‘freeview box’, which is a digital receiver for signals via an aerial.
The cheapest ‘digibox’ available is the non-generic box, however, this is very confusing to use unless you have a technical brain. ‘Freesat digiboxes’ or ‘Sky digiboxes’ are much more reliable options.
You can purchase electrical equipment at most large supermarkets.
You can employ an expert to fit the satellite dish or do it yourself. If you choose to do it your self, position the antennae to receive Astra 2 at 28 degrees east. This will enable you to receive English-speaking channels.
It is French law that you pay for a television licence and this is automatically paid with your taxe d’Habitation bill unless you state that you do not have a television set.
