Education and Schools in France

added by Madeline Horth

If you are moving to France with your children, school education will be a high priority for you. The general feedback about schools in France has been very positive.

Most schools are willing to accept children who do not speak French. They help children fit in and adapt to the French culture. Most schools in France have specially trained teachers providing French lessons for new students.

The French education system is highly reputable and supports structured learning, using traditional teaching methods designed to help pupils pass exams.  However the French government receives criticism that the education system does not sufficiently prepare children for the 'real working world'.

In larger cities there are schools available that teach in English, but younger children will benefit more from attending a local (French speaking) school.

Children who attend a French speaking school tend to start understanding the language after a couple of months. After two to three months children can speak French reasonably well, however, it normally takes between six to twelve months of living in France to be considered fluent. This process is easier for children under ten years of age.
