Driving in France can be a real pleasure, it doesn't take long to cover large distances on the Péages (toll motorways), just don't forget to choose which booth to go to when approaching and ideally carry some change just in case. Below is some advice on driving safely in France.
Drive on the right!
Age: 18years and over
Lights: must include sticker adapters for cars, motorbikes must have lights on in day and night
GB sticker on all UK registered cars
Compulsory equipment: breakdown triangle - E27 standard, High visibility vest INSIDE the car NOT the boot - EN471 standard
A fire extinguisher and spare light bulbs are recommended if travelling to other European destinations where these are requirements
Children: babies must be in a rear facing seat, 9-18kg in a child seat, 15kg-10 years old booster seat, 10+ years old must be in the back seat unless occupied by other children.
Seatbelts must be worn at all times by all passengers
Speed limits: Speed limits are fixed according to the surroundings, the vehicle and the weather.
In built-up areas 31 mph (50 km/h), outside built-up areas 55 mph (90 km/h), but 68 mph (110 km/h) on dual carriageways separated by a central reservation and 80 mph (130 km/h) on motorways.
Wet Weather speed limits of 49 mph (80 km/h) outside built-up areas, 62 mph (100 km/h) on dual carriageways and 68 mph (110 km/h) on motorways apply in wet weather.
Minimum speed limit on motorways 49mph (80km/h).
Insurance: A green card is no longer required but you must have European cover on your insurance and carry the insurance papers while driving.
Driving Licence: must be carried at all times when driving
Emergencies: Dial 112
